  • I rode Dead Dog yesterday (2/27).  The woods on the upper portions of the "skillet" section have been cleared from the Trussville property (formerly school buildings?) down to the trail.  This is the section closest to the main/front/south entrance to the park.

The trail is still intact but the aesthetics have been ruined, at least temporarily.  Does anybody know what's going on here?

    thanks&ride on!

  • I'm sorry I missed you yesterday Keith.  I was riding there around 12:30.  I was the one riding opposite the asylum inmates.  A rider at Cahaba told me he's been harrassed by many riders for going CCW.

Its like Science Club but its Bike Club!

  • Harrassed for going CCW??????   Yeah in their dreams!  There is no "right" ride direction at Trussville and I dare anyone to tell me otherwise,  The ones who do not ride it both directions are truely missing out on half the fun.

I hope to find out whats going on up behind the old elementary school tomorrrow.  I have been ignoring it, but after I cleared a tree Saturday morning that they pushed over onto the trail, it became personal.     Mitch and Keith, you both owe me a beer for making your ride more pleasant.

    Keith"

I stopped by this morning and found out that the culprits reeking havoc up behind the old elementary school are the Trussville Fire and Rescue department.  They have their office up there and I was told that they are clearing the area just off the pavement as a staging area for their use.  I came away not knowing what that actually encompasses though.  They said that they are aware of the trail and are staying away from it. (??)  I told them about the downed tree, so maybe they will be a little more careful from here on out.  They said that when the clearing is finished they intend on putting up a privacy fence.

I also put a call in to the Parks director and ended up leaving him a voice message to make sure he understood what was happening up there.

  • Kevin -- thanks for the update.  For aesthetice I'd prefer a good 10-ft wide privet buffer between the trail and privacy fence if possible.  Also, clearing the woods (and possibly paving) above the trail likely will increase runoff volume and velocity onto the trail.

Mitch -- I may have been just ahead of you.  I rode CCW about that time and noticed a CCW rider above me just before I left the trail at the upper softball parking (Dead Dog staging area).  It's a good ride either direction.  Still working on riding the entire loop with no dabs.

    thanks&ride on!

  • Well I think we can grant your wish for the privet buffer without too much trouble on that hillside .  Mother Nature will take care of it.
